As New Zealands first museum and as a war memorial housed in one of the nations finest heritage buildings - Auckland Museum is a popular destination for tourists and locals alike.
Three expansive levels tell the story of New Zealand's history, from our emergence as a nation through the loss and suffering of war, to our uniquely ancient natural history and our priceless Maori and Pacific treasures. Significant decorative arts and pictorial collections supplement one of New Zealands major heritage libraries, all of which are enhanced by our constantly changing exhibition and events program and our two vibrant Discovery Centres. The Museum is open every day from 10am until 5pm, except Christmas Day (25 December)

Maori Cultural Performance
Daily 11am, 12 noon, 1.30pm
Extra performance at 2.30pm January - April
The Museum presents an outstanding Maori Culture Show. The 30 minute performance will introduce you to the story of New Zealand through traditional song and dance and is performed three times a day (four times a day from January to March). Nowhere else in New Zealand can you be so quickly and so compellingly introduced to the people of New Zealand. The performance is followed by a tour of Maori treasures in the Maori Court where there is also a photo opportunity with the performers. Tickets for Tour Groups may be booked in advance.

Museum Highlights Guided Tour
Daily 10.30am and 2.30pm

The special guided tour profiles some of the Museums most important and fascinating objects, unravelling their stories and explaining their significance to New Zealand. From the Museums pre-eminent colleciton of Maori and Pacific treasures, to our original World War Two aircraft, this is a highlights tour of not-to-be-missed national and international treasures.

Nearby Attractions
The Museum is located in the city’s oldest and most popular park, the Auckland Domain. This expansive area is a respite from the rush and bustle of the city, just minutes away. From playing fields to formal gardens and ponds edged by century-old trees, there is much to see here. Features for visitors include the Winter Garden, Fernz Fernery and duck ponds.
Within an easy walk is Parnell, Auckland’s oldest suburb. Distinctive historic buildings combine with retail and vibrant cafes making Parnell Village a popular tourist attraction.
The Domain also connects Auckland Museum with Grafton, another part of the city with heritage status as a graceful remnant of old Auckland.
Upmarket Newmarket, only a short walk from the Museum features fashion retail at its best as well as movie theatres, a public swimming and fitness centre and loads of great places to eat.
