Maori culture

Welcome to Tamaki Paenga Hira, Auckland Museum

For 150 years Auckland Museum, has protected and cared for the taonga, the treasures, of Iwi and Hapu from throughout Aotearoa. And together we are now forging ahead, to create new levels of understanding and enlightenment in the presentation of Maori culture and customary values, that will benefit all visitors to the Museum.

These pages will link you to the numerous Maori activities, operations, exhibitions, programmes and events that occur daily within our Whare Taonga, and also out in the community.

This building and the exhibits within, represent the shared history of two peoples working together, fighting together, living side by side, and moving forward into the future. Many of the taonga you see here represent our ancestors, and they provide a link back to the past. Treat them with respect.

Nau mai, haere mai, piki mai, kake mai, whakatau mai.
